Casual Racism #1: Australian!?

This might turn into a more regular thing/page – I’m not really sure yet. But I have become aware of the fact that because I am generally a rather tolerant person, I tend to just ignore the instances of casual racism that pop up in my life. I do like to see the best in people, so I’d like to think that it’s just general ignorance, and not targeted racism, but at the end of the day, it’s still discriminatory, no matter what label you slap on it. So here goes – this interaction happened today.

Old Lady: Are you Australian?
Me: What do you mean by that?
Old Lady: (indignantly) Are you Australian?
Me: What do you mean by Australian?
Old Lady: (still quite indignantly) Are you an Australian citizen?
Me: (resigned) Yes.

[It must be noted at this point that I said yes to shut her up, and that my supervisor said I should have said “why does that matter?”]
