I write this while keeping an eye on my cat, because I think she’s scared by all the popping noises that are happening outside. Or maybe she’s just annoyed that I told her to get off the keyboard so I could log in and play computer games. In any case, I’m spending tonight in relative silence, which is just the way I like it.

This is part 1 of ‘happy new year’, because obviously the more exciting new year celebrations will take place in February, thanks to the lunar calendar. (I also get money and free food, and I’m also supposed to get new clothes?)

All the same, it still seems an apt time for reflection, and for good wishes. I hope that none of you get so drunk that you embarrass yourselves tonight (or I guess any night of any year?), and that you enjoy yourself, whatever you are doing.

I hope the new year brings you a twinkle of magic, and that it gets you to believe in something – even if that something is just yourself. I hope you are kind to yourself, and to others. I hope you are brave, that you find love – whether it be in a person, a book, a piece of music, or a film. I hope you will laugh and cry, and learn to forgive.

I hope that at the end of 2016, when you look back at the year and all you’ve done, you can be proud of the person you have become.
